Regular cleaning is important to avoid noise. Bi-monthly maintenance on the filter/impeller area can make it quieter. Bigger changes like keeping the motor/impeller inside the aquarium can make the filters much quieter. Lubricate the o-ring on any HOB or canister filter twice a year with silicone-based lube.
